Google’s Strategic Shift: Manufacturing Pixel Smartphones and Drones in India

In a significant strategic shift, Google has confirmed its plans to manufacture its Pixel smartphones and drones in India. This move is seen as a part of Google's broader plan to decentralize its supply chain from China.

The manufacturing will take place in the southern state of Tamil Nadu, at an existing Foxconn facility. This decision aligns with the trend of global firms looking to diversify supply lines outside China. Major brands like Apple, Samsung, and Xiaomi are already actively making phones in India.

The first batch of 'Made in India' Pixel units are expected to be available from September. Google aims to sell more than 10 million Pixel phones this year, indicating the company's confidence in the Indian market and its manufacturing capabilities.

In addition to smartphones, Google is also planning to manufacture drones in India. The tech giant is reportedly in discussions with the Tamil Nadu government to establish production facilities for drones.

For local manufacturing, Google is in advanced talks with Indian electronics manufacturer **Dixon Technologies** as well as with **Bharat FIH**, an arm of Taiwan’s Foxconn. The partnership will leverage **Padget Electronics**, a wholly-owned subsidiary of Dixon Technologies, which recently signed an agreement with Taiwan's **Compal Electronics**, a global manufacturing partner for Google products. Padget Electronics will be responsible for manufacturing the Pixel devices.

The decision to manufacture in India is also motivated by the production-linked incentive (PLI) scheme for mobile phones and the competitive production price offered by Dixon Technologies.
